What Was in the Mailbox Friday, 11.25.2005?

Friday, the mailbox contained:

Organic and Then Some

Consumers should look beyond the organic label and seek out producers that exceed the federal rules.

The next generation of labels will say “grass fed” butter and “pastured” pork.

Read (New York Times)

I grew up in the country, and the cows’ diets consisted mostly of grass, hay, and some corn. The only farms that I remember where the animals never left the “barn” were some turkey producers.

Children are ‘mosquito magnets’

Children should be the target of malaria control as they are most likely to be bitten by mosquitoes, say researchers. It is not clear why some children provide a more attractive target for mosquitoes.

Read (BBC)

My boys are certainly mosquito magnets. If there’s a mosquito in the area, one of both of them will get bitten, while I almost never get a bite.

Test Post #3 from OPML Editor

I can now post and edit.

I had to replace my xmlrpc.php with Cori Schlegel’s version. His version allowed me to create new posts, but I had to modify his version in order to edit posts.

To edit a post, the function mw_editPost needed the same correction as mw_newPost – the user name and password needed the extra spaces on the end trimmed off. I just trimmed the user name and password of every instance in xmlrpc.php

Saw 2 More Deer While Walking Dog Wednesday Night

Buddy and I saw 2 more deer while walking at 22:00 Wednesday night. These deer were at the [end of Oakview](http://maps.google.com/maps?q=501+Oakview+Dr,+Salem,+VA+24153&spn=0.013073,0.041096&iwloc=A&hl=en “Google Map”), and they appeared to be larger than the deer we saw several nights ago. The deer did not run away when they saw us. Instead, they stood and watched us as we made a u-turn and walked back up the street.

In central North Carolina, there’s little water anywhere

A severe local drought – one of three in the US right now – has nearly emptied Falls Lake, the only water supply for North Carolina’s capital city.

Read (Christian Science Monitor)

Here in Salem, we’ve [received 5.6″ less](http://www.srh.noaa.gov/data/RNK/CLIROA “NOAA”) rain than average this year, but Carvins Cove, which is the reservoir for the city of Roanoke, is actually up [1.4 feet above](http://www.westernvawater.org/WebMgmt/ywbase61b.nsf/vwContentByKey/N2626JNT105PLESEN “Western Virginia Water Authority”) the average water level.
