Biodiesel Keeps Home Fire Burning

The alternative fuel may find its market in a surprising place: folks who need to heat their homes. And it may soon go beyond niche — your used cooking oil could become a commodity. BioHeat is available in 5%, 10%, or 20% (B5, B10, and B20) blends.

Switching all heating-oil customers to 5-percent biodiesel could reduce oil consumption by more than 330 million gallons a year; changing to 100-percent biodiesel (B100) would decrease it by 6.7 billion gallons a year. But biodiesel is more expensive than regular heating oil.

A 5-percent biodiesel blend costs about 5 cents more per gallon than regular heating oil, even at today’s higher prices. Higher-percentage blends are even more expensive. Most residential homes burn between 800 and 1,000 gallons a year, this translates into an annual cost increase of $50 for B5 and $750 for B100.

We’ve used 600 gallons of heating oil each winter for the last 4 years, and I could certainly live with the additional cost of the B5 blend. Now, do any heating oil distributors in Roanoke offer BioHeat?

Mandatory flu shots urged for healthcare workers

Some public health officials are advocating mandatory influenza vaccination of healthcare workers, because current vaccination rates are so low and the potential benefits to patients so high. In 2003, vaccination rates among healthcare workers averaged only about 40 percent.

My wife, who’s a public health nurse, received her “mandatory” flu shot last week.

Black Walnut Gold

An abundant black walnut harvest promises sweet treats and pocket money in Southwest Virginia. Bill’s Auto Salvage in Lee County, Virginia has a hulling machine and has been paying $10 per 100 pounds after hulling.

Read (Roanoke Times)

I have a walnut tree in the front yard, and over the past month, I’ve filled 6 45-gallon trash cans with walnuts. I didn’t think about trying to sell them, but considering that the closest hulling station is 2 hours away, I probably would not have made much, if anything, after I paid for gas.

Donkey eludes rangers, expert

A miniature donkey named Sidekick has been loose since May, and it has spent its time wandering around the Spotsylvania Court House battlefield and evading capture. The National Park Service has tried to capture it numerous times, and last weekend, a Colonel from the Air Force with knowledge about horses also failed to capture Sidekick.

Down Syndrome Now Detectable In 1st Trimester

A first-trimester screening test can reliably identify fetuses likely to be born with Down syndrome, providing expectant women with that information much earlier in a pregnancy than current testing allows, according to a major study being released today, 11/09.

The first-trimester approach identified 87 percent of Down babies when used at 11 weeks, whereas the later quadruple test identified 81 percent. The two tests together picked up 95 percent of cases. Both produced false positives in about 5 percent of cases.

Read (Washington Post)

When my wife was pregnant with each of our 3 children, we told the doctor that we didn’t want to know the results of the Down Syndrome test, because the results would not have changed our decision about having the children, and it would have just added stress to the pregnancies.
