Way of Life Fades as Crabbing Prices Remain Low

The crab prices paid to watermen have remained flat for the last 20 years, and because of this, many watermen are having trouble making ends meet and are leaving the business.

“The old days used to be you could make a living off the water, but not anymore,” he said. “Every day we hear that the prices should be higher.”

What irritates watermen more than minimal profit is that the middlemen who purchase their crabs for $35 a bushel are selling them for $100 or more per bushel.
