Deserts could drive out 50 million

Desertification represents one of the “greatest environmental challenges of our times” and, coupled with global warming, could set off mass migrations of people fleeing degraded homelands, a United Nations report warned Thursday.

The report called on governments in arid regions to revise rules on land use to halt overgrazing and unsustainable irrigation practices. It also urged better coordinated policies to address the problem of desertification.

The report said about 2 billion people, a third of the Earth’s population, are potential victims of desertification, which is defined as land degraded by human activities like farming and grazing.

If the problem is left unchecked, some 50 million people could be forced from their homes over the next decade.

Obesity to fuel Alzheimer’s rise

Rising rates of obesity will lead to dramatic increases in the number of people with Alzheimer’s disease, experts have predicted.

The biggest risk factor for all types of dementia, of which Alzheimer’s disease is the most common, is age. Obesity, smoking, high blood pressure and cholesterol all increase the risk of dementia because they can lead to damage of the blood vessels in the brain, which in turn leads to the death of brain cells.

Better diet, more exercise and lower blood pressure would all help to reduce people’s risk of the condition.

In Ford’s wake along Indian River Road

When Ford Motor Co.’s Norfolk Assembly Plant dropped its evening shift last year, the economic ripple jostled a stretch of businesses on Indian River Road. After the plant ceases production today, the waves will get rougher – though several owners say they will remain unaffected. No one predicted he or she would have to shut down.

The plant sits on a 3-mile stretch of Indian River Road that cuts through three cities – Chesapeake, Norfolk and Virginia Beach. It features a couple of residential patches and a few industrial sections, but mostly a string of commercial outlets – including thrift and drug stores, fast food restaurants and gas stations.

Private dollars leading recovery of New Orleans

With government money for New Orleans trickling through the pipeline, private foundations, wealthy individuals, and philanthropies are playing a larger role than expected.

Billions of federal dollars have been allotted or spent in New Orleans since hurricane Katrina, so it may come as a surprise that the first public works project in the city’s long-term recovery – the Rosa Keller Library in the middle-class Broadmoor neighborhood – was not paid for by American taxpayers but by the Carnegie Foundation in New York.

Paris Neighborhood Stores Thrive

Paris has a thriving culture of small businesses, and not by chance. One of the main goals of Paris is to keep the huge supermarkets out because they are the main competition for small businesses. There are butchers, cheese shops, florists, bakeries and cafes all doing a brisk business on the same street.
