Proposal Would Open Va.’s Piedmont to Mining

A state energy plan being developed by Gov. Timothy M. Kaine’s administration renews prospects of uranium mining in Virginia’s Piedmont, a practice that has been barred by a 25-year-old moratorium.

Marline Corp. said it discovered 30 million pounds of uranium oxide in Pittsylvania County during searches in the late 1970s and in 1982. The company obtained leases on 40,000 uranium-rich acres in the county and 16,000 acres in Fauquier, Madison, Culpeper and Orange counties.
