The Blue Ridge Music Festival was canceled this year because of poor ticket sales in the past. The Blue Man Group didn’t sell out the 8,000 seat Roanoke Civic Center, and The Police didn’t sell out the 16,000 seat John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville. Why? Do we have too many entertainment choices? Are ticket prices too high?
The rapid increase in the number of entertainment options available to people in our area is definitely a factor. One thing to keep in mind is that just because a concert does not sell out does not mean that it should be considered a failure. Granted the Police not selling out JPJ is not a good sign, but other events such as Blue Man Group are not always expected to sell out nor budgeted in that manner.
