Advance Auto To Transfer 40 Jobs From Roanoke to Minneapolis

Advance Auto is moving 40 Inventory and Merchandising jobs from Roanoke to Minneapolis. Considering that Minneapolis is [31% more expensive](http://www.bestplaces.net/col/?salary=50000&city1=55168000&city2=52743000 “Sperling’s Best Places Cost of Living Comparison”) than Roanoke, let’s hope the affected employees receive large pay raises.

Earlier this year, three executives were hired, and they also plan to work in the Minneapolis office. The CEO said that the office in Minneapolis will make it easier for Advance to add new talent.

I have the feeling that we’ll see the Advance Auto decision makers and better paid employees leave Roanoke permanently.

Is America’s suburban dream collapsing into a nightmare?

Arthur C. Nelson, director of Virginia Tech’s Metropolitan Institute, estimates that in 2025 there will be a surplus of 22 million large-lot homes that will not be left vacant in a suburban wasteland. They will be occupied by lower classes who have been driven out of their once affordable inner-city apartments and houses. The McMansion will become the new *multi-family* home for the poor.

Sea Pirates Bloody Growth

Heavy ocean traffic has spawned a surge in sea piracy and a new breed of pirates, the bloodiest the world has seen.

The world currently transports 80% of all international freight by sea. More than 10 million cargo containers are moving across the world’s oceans at any one time. More than 2,400 acts of piracy were reported around the world between 2000 and 2006, roughly twice the number reported for the preceding six-year period.

Although pirate attacks have at least tripled during that time period, the actual number of attacks remains unclear. Shipping companies frequently do not report attacks out of concern that it could increase insurance premiums. And nearly every group of government monitoring sea piracy believes that number is seriously undercounted.

Violence has also become an endemic feature of privacy, particularly over the last five to 10 years. The birth of the illicit global arms trade that emerged after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 made it easier for many to become pirates. The arms trade has also made cheap and powerful weapons available in many parts of the world. Five to six years ago, when pirates attacked, they used machetes, knives and pistols. Today, they come equipped with AK-47s, M-16s, grenades and RPG’s.

New Englanders Brace for Winter Oil Costs

It isn’t even summer yet, and people in New England are already fretting about how they’ll pay to heat their homes next winter. The region relies heavily on home heating oil, and prices are well above $4 a gallon. Some families barely made it through last winter’s expensive heating season.
