Silicon Valley Losing Middle-Wage Jobs

Silicon Valley is in danger of creating its own digital divide. It is losing its middle-class work force at a significant rate, according to an annual report that tracks the economic, social and environmental health of the region. The 2008 Index of Silicon Valley found that from 2002 to 2006, middle-wage jobs fell to 46% of the work force, from 52%.

At the same time, while the percentage of higher-end jobs rose from 26 to 27%, lower-wage jobs expanded to 27 percent, from 22 percent of the work force. In all, more than 50,000 middle-income jobs have disappeared over the four years measured by the study. The vanishing jobs, which paid between $30k and $80k, represent workers who had been in the lower part of the white-collar pyramid, including secretaries, clerks and customer support representatives.

Lillian Vernon lays off half of work force, could file for bankruptcy

In Virginia Beach, Catalog and Internet retailer Lillian Vernon laid off 185 workers Friday – half of the company’s year-round work force – and could file for bankruptcy or be sold.

The company suffered two rounds of layoffs last year. About 190 jobs were eliminated last summer after it lost the call center and distribution business for Time-Life books and music. In December, roughly 140 cuts were made, and they were attributed to the same reasons cited for Friday’s layoffs – rising costs and sluggish sales.

In the past, Lillian Vernon has offered severance packages to terminated salaried employees, but it does not have enough money to provide severance packages this time.

Best U.S. factory jobs in rising jeopardy

A new round of cutbacks by Detroit’s automakers carries a larger message – that America’s manufacturing workers are under new pressure in jobs where labor unions had once been able to command middle-class wages for assembly-line jobs.

The moves signal what some analysts say is an accelerating effort to trim wages and workforces. The old Big Three are becoming a much smaller three. The pressures facing Detroit fit a larger pattern – US manufacturers are facing rising pressure from foreign rivals. The good news is that US factories are becoming more competitive, but the bad news is that the needed streamlining is coming at the expense of American workers.

Tyson Foods Plans to Raise Prices

Tyson Foods, reported that its first-quarter profit slid 40% and said that it would increase prices to offset the higher cost of commodities used to feed cattle, chickens and pigs. Tyson said it expected more than $500 million in additional grain costs this year, well above the $300 million increase it forecast in November.

Tyson had sales of $6.8 billion for the quarter, up from $6.6 billion a year ago. The company earned $34 million in the period ended Dec. 29, down from $57 million in the year-ago quarter.

“Because of these unanticipated and extraordinarily high corn and soybean meal costs, we have no choice but to raise prices substantially,” the chief executive, Richard L. Bond, said. “For the foreseeable future, consumers will pay more and more for food, especially protein.”
