Proposal Would Open Va.’s Piedmont to Mining

A state energy plan being developed by Gov. Timothy M. Kaine’s administration renews prospects of uranium mining in Virginia’s Piedmont, a practice that has been barred by a 25-year-old moratorium.

Marline Corp. said it discovered 30 million pounds of uranium oxide in Pittsylvania County during searches in the late 1970s and in 1982. The company obtained leases on 40,000 uranium-rich acres in the county and 16,000 acres in Fauquier, Madison, Culpeper and Orange counties.

Layaway, other changes irk Wal-Mart loyalists

Long after most mainstream department stores eliminated layaway plans, Wal-Mart continued to offer the service, which appeals mainly to consumers who either don’t have credit cards or already are carrying high credit card debt. But that ended last year when Wal-Mart eliminated the layaway program, leaving many customers seething about the change — and fretting about what to do this holiday season.

The move is especially jarring to some families because it has come amid other changes Wal-Mart has made, including cutting back on fabric departments and stocking more trendy clothes, as the discounting titan tries to appeal to a broader swath of shoppers, including more upscale consumers. Those changes, some longtime shoppers say, has made them feel like the store is less interested in catering to its traditional and loyal market of family shoppers on tight budgets.

Copper’s soaring price attracts thieves

Copper is big business these days — for thieves.

As the price of the not-so-rare metal has climbed, building sites, utility poles, construction companies and businesses are being targeted and stripped of copper, which is then sold to area metal dealers at prices that lately have been hovering around $2 per pound after peaking a few months ago at $2.25.

Study: It doesn’t pay to be smart

If you’re so smart, why aren’t you rich? Although money and mental muscles may seem a natural match, brains, alas, may be more hindrance than help when it comes to getting rich, concludes a new study in the journal Intelligence.

Being more intelligent does not confer any advantage along two of the three key dimensions of financial success (income, net worth and financial distress). Income does weakly correspond to intelligence test scores, the study finds, where a one point increase in IQ test scores is related to an income increase of $346 per year.
