1 in 4 farmers at least 65

So many American farmers are working longer than ever before that one in four is at least 65 years old. Within the next decade those older farmers will be looking for someone to take over their operations and selling millions of acres of land.

Much of that land will be merged into bigger farms with fewer people working on them. Rural communities will lose even more young people, and a few will struggle for survival. Some stores that sell tractors and fertilizer will suffer with the consolidation.

Rising milk prices in our aisles

Consumers have noticed a sharp rise in the price of beef and milk, an increase that has some business owners fretting.

Food and beverage prices jumped 3.9% in May, the largest increase in three years. Milk costs could jump even higher this month, based on data from Virginia’s State Milk Commission. In a breakdown for Western Virginia, the report shows that the price paid to farmers for 100 pounds of raw milk will rise 2.5% in July.

In Ford’s wake along Indian River Road

When Ford Motor Co.’s Norfolk Assembly Plant dropped its evening shift last year, the economic ripple jostled a stretch of businesses on Indian River Road. After the plant ceases production today, the waves will get rougher – though several owners say they will remain unaffected. No one predicted he or she would have to shut down.

The plant sits on a 3-mile stretch of Indian River Road that cuts through three cities – Chesapeake, Norfolk and Virginia Beach. It features a couple of residential patches and a few industrial sections, but mostly a string of commercial outlets – including thrift and drug stores, fast food restaurants and gas stations.

Paris has a thriving culture of small businesses, and not by chance. One of the main goals of Paris is to keep the huge supermarkets out because they are the main competition for small businesses. There are butchers, cheese shops, florists, bakeries and cafes all doing a brisk business on the same street.

Chinese Auto Parts Enter the Global Market

China’s auto parts exports have increased more than sixfold in the last five years, nearly topping $1 billion in April and emerging as one of the fastest-growing categories of Chinese industrial products sold overseas. More than half of these auto parts go to the United States; most of the rest to Europe and Japan.

The rise of Chinese auto parts exports is part of a much broader shift. China is moving up from basic goods like textiles, toys and shoes and toward higher-value industrial goods that pay better wages — but also compete more directly with products from countries like Mexico and even from advanced industrialized countries like the United States.

Feeling the pinch are small auto parts manufacturers and their employees in the United States, heavily concentrated in Ohio and mainly supplying larger auto parts companies instead of shipping directly to the big automakers. While overall American industrial production is on the upswing, the troubles of the auto parts industry could become an issue in next year’s presidential elections.
