Hmong Fill Jobs Left Empty by Immigration Raid

The Crider poultry-processing plant in Stillmore, Ga., lost two-thirds of its work force last year after a federal immigration agency raid.

Since then, Crider has scrambled to replace the employees. It has staged job fairs, boosted starting pay and even contracted for Georgia prison inmates to work on its production line. In an unusual experiment, Crider has also recruited a small group of Laotian [Hmong](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hmong_people “Wikipedia’s Hmong People Page”) refugees to move from Minnesota to Georgia, hoping they’ll start a new community.

As pork prices soar, Chinese put brakes on corn for ethanol

Ethanol production has put the Chinese government in an unpleasant bind, as fears rise that the environmentally friendly gasoline additive is also fueling politically dangerous increases in the price of food – particularly pork, a key staple.

With the ethanol industry gobbling up a growing share of China’s corn harvest, authorities have stomped on the brakes to slow what one official report calls “blind” investment in distilleries.

Thursday, the gasoline prices at the BP @ Apperson & Colorado in Salem, VA were:

Grade Price
Regular $2.859
Mid $2.959
Premium $3.059
Diesel $2.799
Kerosene $2.699

Gas prices were down 4 cents per gallon today.

For the month of May, the price of regular unleaded saw a net increase of 5 cents per gallon, mid-grade increased 4 cents, and premium increased 2 cents per gallon.

So far this year, gas prices have increased 70 cents per gallon, and diesel prices have increased 30 cents per gallon.

Regular gas prices were down 4 cents per gallon. Mid grade prices were down 6 cents, and premium prices were down 8 cents per gallon today.

Gas prices were up 4 cents per gallon today.

For the month of April, gas prices increased 30 cents per gallon. Diesel prices were unchanged.

So far this year, gas prices have increased 64 cents per gallon, and diesel prices have increased 30 cents per gallon.

Road To Ruin: Subprime Lending In The Auto Industry

Wall Street is beginning to worry that subprime lending, currently unraveling in the mortgage industry, will deliver a double whammy to the economy as more and more consumers, who financed their cars with subprime loans, default. If it happens, consumer activists say banks and car dealers only have themselves to blame.

Car dealers are destroying their market, with phony loan documents and hidden charges that are driving their subprime customers into default.
