Outsourcing Fuels Fairfax County’s Job Growth

A federal report finds Fairfax County has added more private sector jobs over the last 15 years than D.C., Montgomery, Prince George’s and Loudoun counties combined — about 100,000 jobs in all. At the same time, D.C. has added 31,000 jobs; Montgomery, 30,000; and Prince George’s and Loudoun counties each added 12,000.

Bureau of Labor Statistics economists say the shift in job creation from D.C. to Fairfax wasn’t unexpected because the federal government has been outsourcing more work to private contractors, although they are surprised at how quickly the change has taken place.

Ace Hardware Prospers by Selling Convenience

A focus on convenience and knowledgeable service has enabled the 4,600-store [Ace Hardware](http://www.acehardware.com “Ace Hardware Website”) chain to stake out a modest but healthy share of the huge hardware market, providing the impetus for the biggest new-store expansion in its history.

The 83-year-old chain just concluded its best sales year since 1998, with wholesale sales up 6.5 percent to $3.4 billion and a record bottom line exceeding $104 million, based on preliminary figures. Its stores, about two-thirds owned by independent dealers, racked up almost $12 billion in retail sales. Ace appears to have outperformed Lowes and Home Depot in same-store sales growth for the fourth year in the last five.

Ace is not the place for the lowest prices or the biggest assortment of home improvement goods; the big boxes have it beaten in those categories. But analyst Howard Davidowitz says it is nonetheless doing “tremendous” business by emphasizing convenience and by continuing to upgrade the esthetics of the stores.

Economist warns ethanol plants gobbling up too much corn

An agricultural economist and founder of a Washington-based environmental think tank said that ethanol production will consume much more corn than the government has estimated and could result in shortages of corn for livestock feed, driving up production costs and causing higher food prices. He said rapid ethanol industry expansion has caused data to fall behind developments in the field. He warned that nearly twice as much corn as the government has estimated will be needed from the 2008 harvest to feed the ethanol plants that will be online by then.

The demand for corn by ethanol plants will result in higher prices for food staples such as milk, eggs, meat and cheese.
