Virginia Tech 16, Miami 10

Read (yahoo.com)

For the first time in a long time, the Hokies did not have a late season collapse, and they won the ACC title. I guess Tech was the surprise of the ACC since they were picked to finish 6th in the preseason poll. Frank Beamer’s bonus check certainly got fatter after his team won.

Because Tech’s going to a BCS bowl game, Beamer’s bonus increases from $143,227 to $264,840, and if he wins the BCS game, he’ll receive an additional $15,000 vs. $10,000 for winning a regular bowl game. His coordinators receive bonuses of $35,000 each for the BCS bowl game vs. $30,000 for a non-BCS bowl game, and the other 7 full-time assistants get $20,000 bonuses instead of the $10,000 they would have received for a non-BCS bowl. The Assistants also receive an additional bonus if Tech wins the BCS bowl game.

Sean Taylor Pleads Not Guilty

Redskins safety Sean Taylor enters a not guilty plea on Wednesday to a drunken driving charge stemming from an Oct. 25 incident. A Jan. 5 trial date is set.

Do Taylor’s good points outweigh his bad points? He’ll make a great tackle or an interception, and then several plays later, he’ll commit a stupid unsporstmanlike conduct penalty. And then there are his off-the-field antics, like this drunk driving charge.

Pacers-Pistons Brawl

I just watched the Pacers-Pistons brawl on IFILM, and there was no excuse for that fight. Something like that should never happen. Artest wanted time off to promote his rap album, and he got it by way of a 1 year suspension for his part (the primary part) in the brawl. Of course, Artest doesn’t think the suspension is fair, and the player’s union lawyer is appealing Artest’s suspension.

Bill Walton got it right when he said Artest’s punishment was too soft. Pacer’s President of Basketball Operations, Larry Bird, said he supports Artest 100%. I guess that’s what he has to say. Reggie Miller was suspended for one game for leaving the bench when the video showed that he left the bench to try to calm Artest down. The Pistons fans share some responsibility for this too, and those who took part should be punished.

Brunell Was on His Last Legs

Brunell ‘Was on His Last Legs’ (washingtonpost.com)

A survey of 8 NFL General Managers concluded that the Redskins paid too much for Brunell. Really? I think everybody except Joe Gibbs knew that. I would like to hear Joe Gibbs justify the Brunell deal.

If Brunell is cut next year, he’ll either count $7.165 million against the 2005 cap or $1.93 million in 2005 and $5.7 million in 2006. Ouch. Either way that hurts. If Daniel Snyder thought Marty Schottenheimer needed a General Manager, what’s he thinking now?

Redskins Lose Again 11/14

Bengals 17, Redskins 10 (nfl.com)

If I had to pick one word to describe the Redskins offense today, it would be horrible. Brunell was inept again, and Joe Gibbs replaced him with the equally inept Patrick Ramsey. Ramsey looked as bad as he did last year when playing for Steve Spurrier. Hey, maybe it wasn’t all Spurrier. Maybe, it was the horrible quarterback.

Tim Hasselbeck looked better than Ramsy last year, so let’s give him a shot next week. Hasn’t the punter, Tom Tupa played quarterback before? Joe Gibbs was right when he decided in the offseason that the quarterback position needed to be upgraded, but Brunell was the wrong choice. I would really like to know what he saw in Brunell.

Redskins Lost Another One Last Week, 10/31

Yahoo! Sports – NFL – Packers 28, Redskins 14

The Redskins lost another one last week, and they’re playing the Lions, who are almost as bad as the Redskins, this week. As I write this, the Redskins had a 4th and goal from the 1. They elected to go for it, and they received a false start penalty. They had to settle for a field goal, and now, the kickoff just went out of bounds. Go Skins.
