Man’s Answer to Permit Law on Holiday Displays: A Giant Lawn Grinch

For several years, Alan Aerts has mounted an elaborate Christmas display outside his home in Monte Sereno, Calif. The holiday exhibit attracted thousands of visitors, to the chagrin of some of his neighbors. The city council then enacted an ordinance requiring a permit for such visitor-attracting presentations. Rather than applying for the permit and submitting to its limitations, Mr. Aerts built a giant statue of the Dr. Seuss character the Grinch on his lawn. NPR’s Melissa Block talks to Mr. Aerts.
