Virginia State cuts will have big impact on college students

Students in Virginia colleges and universities could be facing some tougher decisions as the state implements a series of budget cuts.

State-supported schools will lose about $194 million – a reduction of 13 percent to 15 percent – under cuts proposed by Gov. Tim Kaine.

The governor hopes to cut that in half by getting federal permission to start using federal stimulus funds reserved for 2011 early.

But the impact could be significant for students now in school.
