Mitten Crab Found Last Week Was Not the First in Maryland Waters

The Chinese mitten crab found in Baltimore’s Patapsco River wasn’t
the first, and that has scientists concerned about the prospect there
may be more alien crabs in Chesapeake Bay waterways.

A volunteer park ranger at North Point State Park recognized the
mitten crab in a newspaper picture as a close relative of one given to
him by a waterman two or three years ago. After the crab died, he saved it in his freezer. Experts confirmed Monday that it was another mitten crab.

The discovery of a second crab could mean the species is breeding in
Maryland waters, but the most likely scenario is that two different
ships unintentionally carried the crabs in their ballast into Baltimore
Harbor.
